So picking the right mouthwash in a supermarket may actually be a little tricky. Most of them have high alcohol content and artificial flavourings. They can freshen your breath for a short while, but may not be good for longterm use. Plus, the alcohol will dry out your mouth. On the other hand, and all natural mouthwash can be made at home with many ingredients you’ll probably have in your pantry anyway.
All of the following methods simply require a quick 30-60 seconds swish in your mouth. Just like regular mouthwash, remember to spit it out! You can choose to gargle the all natural mouthwash as well.
1. Saltwater rinse
Let’s start with the simplest of them all: a saltwater rinse. Salt acts as a natural disinfectant, so you have a combination of washing away the bacteria with liquid and killing them salt. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of ordinary table salt with a cup of warm water.
2. Backing soda combo
Baking soda is a very versatile compound that can be used as a cleaning agent in your home as well as baking cakes! But it can also freshen your breath. Add t tablespoon of baking soda, a few drops of lemon juice, peppermint extract and tea tree oil into a saucepan of water. Let it simmer for 3 mins then cool until lukewarm. Only then should you swish in your mouth.
3. Honey & cinnamon
Another all natural mouthwash is a honey combination by adding a tablespoon each of baking soda, cinnamon and honey. Mix it with water in a saucepan and simmer for a couple of minutes. Swish once it’s cooled to a safe temperature.
4. Aromatic all natural mouthwash
Contrary to what you might expect, these aromatic flavourings are great for killing the bacteria in your mouth that are responsible for the foul odour. You kill the bacteria you kill the source. Simple. But it will also leave behind a pleasant smell. Just mix into a saucepan of heated water 3 bay leaves, 3 cloves, a few fenugreek and fennel seeds. Then a sprinkle of cinnamon and cardamom powder.
5. Essential oils
But please note: you’ll want to use an FDA-approved food-grade essential oil, which means it’s technically safe to digest. Although we aren’t drinking it, we’re still putting it in our mouth. Most essential oils aren’t safe for such consumption, but here are a couple: peppermint & tea tree. Essential oils have many antiseptic qualities to go along with the baking soda. Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 3 drops of each oil. The best part about this method is you can store this all natural mouthwash for multiple uses later.
6. Salt with added spice
All you need for this one is 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of cloves and 1 whole cinnamon stick. Combine the ingredients in a bowl then add hot (not boiling) water and let it infuse for 2 hours before straining/sieving. Then you’re ready to go, and like option 5, you can store this in your bathroom for many uses
So that’s it. Try and use one of these all natural mouthwashes once daily for fresh breath! You can check out this video below and this article on how made one of the mouthwash remedies:
