Homemade cockroach repellent solutions
It’s highly likely that cockroaches will survive the apocalypse. They have already survived for millions of years and proven to be difficult to eradicate. To make matters worse, they can survive for weeks without food or water and have a life span that can range from 6 to 18 months. Let’s look at the homemade cockroach repellent remedies so they don’t live that long!
They can get into your home through the slightest little crack or gap, or even through a drain. If you see one, you can expect there are way more of them about.
Of the thousands of cockroach species – yes, thousands – 70 have been found in the United States, and approximately 30 have been linked to commercial and residential structures inhabited by humans.
The saliva, urine and faeces of cockroaches contribute to allergy and asthma issues, but that is just the beginning of their negative health impact on humans.
A clean home goes a long way in keeping them at bay. But that’s after they have found their way in. Cockroaches venture indoors because they prefer warm, humid environments. They stay indoors when they find food.
A Roach by Any Other Name
Water bugs and palmetto bugs are two of the common names people use to refer to American and Oriental cockroaches. Interestingly enough, three different cockroaches are commonly referred to as palmetto bugs throughout the Southeast. And even though roaches frequent moist areas, they aren’t true water bugs. All the more reason proper identification is important.
American Cockroaches, the flying kind, are the largest “household” roaches in the U.S. and are known to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven kinds of other human pathogens. Much like flies, they pick up germs on their legs and then spread them to surfaces. Though they generally live outdoors, they can and will enter your home in search of food.
German Cockroaches are smaller indoor pests that find their way into homes by hiding in bags, boxes, and infested items such as used furniture. Eggs are laid 40 at a time and German Cockroaches can reproduce rapidly. Because they have no predators inside human homes, an infestation can get out of hand quickly. German Cockroaches are often found to be hard to eliminate because they are resistant to insecticides. They too spread bacteria and disease-causing pathogens.
Oriental Cockroaches may enter homes through pipes and drains and will take up residence in garbage disposals, sink cabinets, and seldom-used drains such as those in guest bathrooms. These roaches secrete an odour which can taint stored food. Like other species, they carry nastiness that they transfer to the various surfaces of your home and are capable of contributing to disease.
There are a number of other bugs that people mistakenly identify as roaches, including actual water bugs, crickets, and a few types of beetles. Proper identification will lead to proper treatment and abatement.
Elimination of Cockroaches Indoors
There are a number of effective methods for getting rid of cockroaches inside your home without resorting to synthetic chemicals. Glue traps, boric acid, diatomaceous earth, even soap traps are all helpful in managing infestations. I’ve made a list of the top products to buy in the lightbox below.
Successful eradication of roaches, however, will require getting to the places where they hide, breed, and lay eggs. This may mean moving furniture or even drilling holes into walls.
Cockroaches only have three stages in their life cycle: egg, nymph, and adult. As with other insects, your treatment plan will need to consider these pests at their different life stages. Egg casings may be hidden behind any large object that sits against a wall, between books, even on clothing in the back of closets.
The most effective way to get rid of adult roaches without synthetic chemicals is powdered treatments such as boric acid and diatomaceous earth.
Prevention & Monitoring
Outdoor conditions cannot be managed to the extent to eradicate cockroaches from the face of the earth. The only way to stay ahead of infestations is to monitor glue traps and maintain bait stations indoors. It is also important to locate and seal up all possible entry points into the home, including areas around plumbing and wires.
