How it works

A high-efficiency particulate air filter, or HEPA filter, is used to cleanse and purify the air. Because they are so efficient, hospitals use them, and industries where very clean air is so essential, such as food and microelectronic factories.

In a nutshell, the air is pulled in from one side and pushed through the other whilst entering a series of filters. The filters trap the air pollutants in a mesh of fibres through a variety of ways that we’ll discuss soon. It removes microscopic particles; invisible, dangerous pollutants that you’ve had no choice but to inhale, until now…

Trust me, you’ll be really surprised at how much your quality of life will improve. After all, the air we breathe is so integral to our wellbeing.

How to use the PARTU Air Purifier

Firstly, lets quickly run through the specs:

The PARTU BS-08 air filter is a modest size: it’s not the biggest but it ain’t the smallest either; standing at 15.3×6.9×6.9 inches, and weighing a little under 3 kg, you can easily transport it from room-to-room. You’ll have no problem lifting it, that’s for sure!

The PARTU air filter as seen on Amazon
Figure A – the PARTU air purifier is also available on Amazon U.S.

No batteries required – you plug it into a wall socket and away you go, and it has a 35 W power usage. Plus, it comes with a 24-month warranty, and at a retail price of £65.99, you’re getting A LOT for what it does. The price is very competitive. You can spend considerably more that’s for sure.

The PARTU air purifier has 5 buttons
Figure B – a simple, aesthetic 5-button interface. Well, the ‘Filter’ isn’t really a button; that just lights up when the filter cartridge needs changing.

As seen in Figure B, we’ve got 5 buttons:

  • On/Off – powers the device up and off
  • Lamp – has 3 settings. The lighting works in a colour-changing style. One colour displays at a time before changing. There are seven different colours. Setting 1 displays the strongest luminosity, setting 2 is the same but duller, and pressing the button a third time turns the lights off
  • Anion – pressing it releases 6 million anions into the air* for cleaning.
  • Filter – you don’t actually press this one. Rather, it lights up for filter changing. You’ll need to do this once every 6-8 months. And it’s very easy to change by twisting off the base in a counterclockwise direction. Just remember to remove the plastic on the new filter before inserting. There is a specific air filter needed: PARTU BS-08 replacement. At £22.99 it ain’t a bad deal considering you’re getting 6-8 months out it. But the package does come with 1 filter when you buy.
  • Speed – again it has 3 settings. One is the slowest, three being the highest

*Sounds sinister but don’t be alarmed. The anion particles are negatively charged and combine with the positively charged (cation) air pollutants. Upon attachment, they deposit out of the air and are rendered harmless because you’ll no longer inhale them when they’re out of suspension.

Perks of the PARTU Air Purifier

It has an intuitive memory setting that remembers your last working mode. This is great if you only use it at nighttime. Let’s say you don’t like the light on because it’s distracting, and you have it on the lowest speed because the fan is too noisy otherwise. Well, it will remain as such every night you turn it on before bedtime. Simple!

Or perhaps you like the colour-changing mode? Either way, once you found your perfect combo, you may not even feel the need to change it. And with PARTU, you don’t do it manually.

There are 5 layers in the filter: membrane net, mesh scaffold, activated carbon, HEPA, pre-filter. All of which are specially designed to remove pollen, mould, dust, pet dander, VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and particulate matter. Including the dreaded PM2.5. That’s particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less, and their harmful health effects are well document. Rest assured, the PARTU purifier can capture 0.3 microns so can handle this comfortably.

So the PARTU filter removes impurities in 4 ways:

  1. Sieving – the largest particles are trapped this way. The particles are lodged between the pores of the filter, effectively snaring them
  2. Impaction – large particles collide with the fibres and are absorbed
  3. Interception – medium-sized particles are trapped in between the fibres
  4. Diffusion – the smallest of molecules are trapped in an erratic fashion as they collide with gas molecules and then absorbed by the fibres

In addition, the air purifier is very quiet on speed setting 1. It’s only 25 dB and just for reference, a whisper is 30 dB…

So you aren’t being kept awake at night. On it’s highest setting its only 48 dB.

Top Tip: try to minimize the length of time you leave your windows open because it decreases the PARTU filters effectiveness. At least close them whilst you’re running the purifier. Plus, it’s always a good idea anyway to keep windows closed if you’re neighbourhood experiences a high pollen count or air pollution episode.

What makes a HEPA filter different?

You are capturing a vast array of pollutants: 99.97% of indoor particles 0.3 microns in size to be precise. It’s a HUGE amount of harmful particles trapped. So this PARTU filter has the stamp of approval because it’s HEPA. You see, in order to get this classification, you have to be tested by the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology. So you know it’s a guarantee this particular air filter meets this very high standard. You will be getting clean and purified air: plain and simple.

Just so you know, 0.3 microns is tiny. Take a look at Figure C to understand what we’re dealing with here. It’s a millionth of a meter, after all….

How and electronic air cleaner works
Figure C – with the exception of the finest of tobacco particles, it’s pretty much getting everything

A 12-week air sampling exercise found many affirmative results. They used HEPA filters and then monitored indoor air quality. They found great improvements. Fine particulate matter (PM) decreased by 55% and sources of outdoor pollution by 23%. You see PM2.5 is very difficult to control because the particle size is so small. As such, the particles will do far more than irritate the upper respiratory tract, rather, they can deposit deep into the lungs. And coupling the filter with keeping windows closed in high air pollution episodes is greatly reducing the outdoor source.

It’s the finest of particles that are most lethal.

Moreover, you don’t want to go with really cheap filters. You get what you pay for in the end. Cheap fibreglass filters remove 10% of pollutants, pleated air filters 45%, and high-efficiency air filters achieve 85%. But HEPA filters are the crème de la crème. They remove 99.97%. And they capture the smallest of impurities that the others don’t.

You may even save a little on your energy bills. So if you have an air conditioning unit in your home, fine particles can clog it and reduce efficiency. It has to work harder to cool the place down, consuming more energy in the process. Less harmful particles in the air have more than just health benefits, you know…

Health risks from poor indoor air quality

A lot of people don’t realize that air pollution from outdoors can work its way indoors. You aren’t as well shielded as you think, especially if you’re having the windows open frequently. If you live in a major city, or a high pollution zone, you’re doing yourself and family a really good deed with an air purifier.

As you saw in the whiteboard animation video, there are a lot of ill-health effects. And we spend 90% of our time indoors. That’s a lot of adverse exposures! And, it’s not exactly easy to escape from. Paints, plastics, carpets, and fibres – the everyday household items give off VOC’s.

So I think it’s evidently clear vacuuming isn’t enough to keep your home truly clean. And you may only do this once a week. An air filter will work 24/7 for you. For instance, your dogs, as much as you love them, are a wonderful source of airborne pollutants. Pet dander is a mix of exfoliated skin and hair, not to mention the bacteria and odour they’ll bring in from the outdoors. Also, your cat crawling across your bed when you’re not home, depositing danger in the fabric. Just what you need to have the worst possible nights sleep!

But it’s not just your pets. Your hay fever is exacerbated with pollen migration indoors, mould spores exist in damp conditions, and so your bathroom is the perfect breeding ground. And dust mites are everywhere, especially in your carpets, curtains, and bedding. They’ll do more than worsen nasal congestion, with many suffering from allergic skin reactions.

Health benefits

The PARTU air filters are also great at removing unpleasant odours. You know those cooking smells that seem to linger for days…

Cabbage, curry, onion, garlic, etc. It tastes so good but man, it STINKS!

Well, the PARTU filter will deposit the bad smells out of suspension so your nose can’t get to it!

Linked to this is cigarette smoke. The smell lingers and can be quite nauseating. But of course, you’re also reducing the secondhand smoking risk. And it’s not just secondhand smoke persisting. Bacteria, like an airborne flu virus, has a greater chance of infecting someone when you’re exposed to it for longer.

What’s more, your quality of sleep can improve. There are many contributing factors, such as temperature and mattress quality, but the air we breathe is imperative. Poor quality air will increase nasal congestion, forcing you to breathe through your nose, which is bad for your health. Furthermore, you’ll wake up with a dry, sometimes sore throat, and dry mouth, which is bad for your teeth and gums. As such, the PARTU purifier will leave you feeling refreshed in the morning.

You’ll be mitigating many health problems. Nasal congestion, sneezing, watery eyes, and runny noses may be a thing of the past. This is because you’ll have fewer allergic reactions and asthmatic problems. You aren’t breathing in the culprits anymore, right? Certainly, you’ll have an air filter that will stop this and improve your cardiovascular health.

In conclusion, I think you’d be doing yourself a real injustice if you don’t have a HEPA filter. It’s not like avoiding a mouldy piece of bread, or murky water because you can SEE the danger. Above all, it’s very easy to avoid. But how are you going to do it with air? You can’t exactly run away from it. It’s very hard to control. Of course, unless you have a HEPA filter. Let it do the hard work for you.
